I can't speak for the nature of all .dat files, but, whatever you
do, DO NOT delete c:\windows\system.dat or c:\windows\user.dat
(or system.da0 or user.da0). These are your registry, and Win95
will not run without them.

Microsoft has a program (I believe it is MSCVRT.???) which will
perform this operation. Not having OSR2 myself, I have not run
it. It is included (I believe) with Win98 and I believe it can be
downloaded from somewhere in the labyrinth of the M$ web site.
I'm sure others on this list can advise you of ease and/or
pitfalls.
