The December 1, 1998 PC magazine address' this subject on
page 315 in the User to User section.  The solution is to remove
all the .act files from the "Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\
Actors" folder.  If you save these files in another folder you
can reenable the Office Assistant by putting them back in the
Actors folder.  There are other options that the article
covers about ways to tone down the assistant and to remove
the animation.  The article states that by eliminating the
Office assistant you lose the Natural-language help system.
Your colleague might want to look over this article to check
out the other options.  Removing the .act files will return
the system to Word help.
