hi, newsgroup. wonder if someone can help me with this.
i'm using a laptop with win95a, 64 megs of ram, 1.2 gig hard drive,
generally a smooth-running system.
while doing some testing, i went to control panel/system/performance and
found all my partitions are "using ms-dos compatibility mode file
system", and a warning that "compatibility mode paging reduces overall
system performance." the help tip says windows was "unable to identify
a real-mode driver or memory resident program loaded in your config.sys
or autoexec.bat." because windows could not identify the driver or
program, it has switched to ms-dos compatibility mode to ensure the
program will run. to improve performance, remove the program or driver
causing the problem, or contact the manufacturer for an updated
version."
i have tried rem-ing out various lines in those two files, but got the
same information. then i tried booting up in "safe" mode to see if the
error message re-appeared. but trying to go into safe brought up the
message "registry problem: windows encountered an error accessing the
system registry-you should restore the registry now and restart your
computer."
don't know if the two problems are related. i did put my backup
registry in, but the problem continued. this could have happened a year
ago, for all i know, and i only keep a month worth of registry backups.
the strange thing is, the computer seems to be working ok. except,
apparently, slower. i have checked the "system properties" window
before (but not recently) and the dos compatibility mode message was not
there. i've spent several days trying to tweak the settings, and going
over windows 95 and ms dos books, but to no avail. any tips or
suggestions would be much appreciated.
thanks! jim wishner/minnesota
