You don't need to take such drastic action. Simply Right Click on the
"Deleted Items" folder, and select the - Empty "Deleted Items" folder -
option. This permanently removes the messages in that folder.

To free-up diskspace, you then need to compact that folder. This can be
accomplished by selecting (left click) on the "Deleted Items" folder. Next
select the "File" option on the main menus, then  the Folders option from
the drop-down panel, then select "Compact" "or Compact All." The "Compact"
option only compacts the folder selected, while "Compact All", compacted all
folders.
