What exactly do you mean? Do you mean by disconnecting power? That's a
recipe for disaster, though of course you don't have any option. Just
ensure everything's closed before you try to shut down, and reopen without
any startup programs.
Presumably you've installed the Win 98 shutdown patches, disabledPower
Management, and read all the MSKB info on this well-documented
problem. Closing to dos first, then shutting down helps sometimes, though
not really a fix.
