A couple more comments...

Holli mentioned that her re-formatting technique didn't work all the time.
A lot of formatting is tied to the ending paragraph mark.  I turn on the
show paragraph marks so that I can see when I select a paragraph mark to do
paragraph re-formats.  If a new paragraph mark is entered after the one
where you have done format changes, it's paragraph will take on different
properties (depending on what formatting was in effect before the
re-formatting).

As far as setting the spaces between items, I much prefer to enter the
first item (paragraph), select the paragraph mark ending the item, then
right click, chose paragraph format, and set the points for the spacing
after the paragraph. Then there will be the correct spacing after the next
paragraph mark.
