I was recently chasing the same sort of info myself, about recovering a
Packard Bell system after the original HDD collapsed.
I didn't log the sites I found, but Google found a lot of stuff about
problems associated
with recovery attempts on PB systems, when the original equipment is no
longer in use.
If I understood what I read correctly, it seems like the original hard drive
had a snippet of code hidden on it, which has to co-ordinate with the CD
recovery program to work properly. Which would seem to indicate that
replacing a hard drive on a PB system might involve some complex work, if
you aim to use the recovery program.
I'll be trying it in a day or so, when the new HDD arrives, so I'll post any
progress.
