Having read what others have had to say regarding SystemWorks I think
that some people have the wrong slant on this software. If it was no
good Norton would not be able to sell it and it would have died a
natural death long ago.
Sure, it is not the be all and end all of this type of program but
before condemning it completely, let's think about what it contains and
what it does.
Norton Utilities.
They all work fine and help clear up some of the mess left by other
programs, especially Windows itself. Norton System Doctor normally works
OK but can cause problems. Are the problems a fault of NSD or other
programs? A good question.
Speed Disk. As pointed out, it is slow. Better to invest in Diskeeper.
Its automatic so fragmentation becomes a thing of the past.
Norton Antivirus.
A very good antivirus program that will automatically keep itself up to
date. You only need to scan incoming data, be it from the internet,
floppy or CD. A once a week full scan will ensure nothing is missed.
Norton CleanSweep.
My personal feeling is that this part of SystemWorks plays a big part in
most problems experience with SystemWorks. Therefore, my recommendation
is - do not use CleanSweep.
Norton Ghost.
You cannot get better software for cloning a disk.
Extra Features.
I do not use any of the Extra features so I cannot comment on those
elements. If part of Norton does not bring about a known improvement/fix
then do not use it. That advice applies to any program. You just do not
know how one program will interact with another.
FWIW I am still using SystemWorks 2002 (my second version of
SystemWorks) and have never had any problems what so ever. I will
probably upgrade to 2004 when my subscription becomes due.
