Internet access companies are not non-profit organizations.
Somebody has to pay for the equipment and the staff and the
phone lines and the software development and .........

If you want free access to the 'net, then you have to put up with
the ad banners.

Of course the banners are in the way!  If they didn't deliberately
place them in strategic locations, you would just ignore them.
By putting the banner over top of buttons and/or menu items,
you are forced to look at the ad.

In my experience, NetZero has the smallest banners of the services
I have experimented with, but I haven't tried ALL the free services,
so that statement is nothing more than my opinion.
