I also tell my clients to never get a parallel scanner. Everyone that I know
that has, has had problems of one sort or another. If you can take it back
and get your money back and/or exchange, get a SCSI type or USB.  The SCSI
Umax models I have used and sold to clients have worked well except for that
occasional loss of scanner which a re-boot cures and installing the DTC
drivers for the SCSI card.
