      I  have Outlook Express, (no Outlook 98)
and My spell checking  has ALWAYS worked perfectly.
(Word has been on this machine "forever"...)
     You don't need the Outlook 98 if all you want
is spell checking in Outlook Express.
     To "straighten this out" you may have to do several
un-installs and a couple re-installs...  This will let the
programs detect each other while "new"...
