I agree with Hal. Open Office has worked very well for me for the last 
3+ years. I do save any documents I create in MS Office format so that 
they are easily usable by  those that do not have Open Office. Open 
Office uses MS Office formats without any problems that I have noticed. 
It is very much like MS Office and the learning curve is almost non 
existent. If I remember correctly, when I started I had to download a 
separate free spell checker that worked as part of Open Office and as 
part of Outlook Express. I think the latest version of Open Office 
includes a spell checker. Of course, you may not need a spell checker. I do!
