I have noticed similar, strange problems lately. The last one that I had I was able to work-around by going to an account with
administrator privileges and make the changes. Since cardfiles are probably unique to the account, you could try to temporarily
make your account have administrator privileges while you make the changes. If that works, let us know. It could be that SP3 has
introduced some security measures that were not in older versions and may not work quite right, or, at least, not the way you would
want them to work. This is all a guess, though.

Subject: [PCSOFT] Read only problem
Hello,
I have kept Windows cardfile on my computer since the days of Windows
3.1 and I keep phone numbers and addresses in a cardfile.
The last couple of times I have opened my cardfile I have been warned
that it is Read Only and I can't save any changes to it.
I checked the Properties sheet for the file and Read Only is not check
marked.
Anybody got any ideas how I can get this file working right again?
I'm on Win XP SP3 on an e-Machine T3410.
