Hi Joyce.

Yeah, ASK toolbar - not malicious ,just a nuisance if you don't want it.

Yes ,you could remove everything related to ASK ,but read below.

To uninstall you can also try REVO uninstaller

 http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Scroll down, following the Free column and download the installer or

below that is also a portable version.

From the "source" there is a Removal tool - more info below

http://help.ask.com/link/portal/30015/30018/Article/1/How-do-I-remove-the-Ask-com-Toolbar

Direct download - Ask Toolbar remover

http://apnmedia.ask.com/media/toolbar/utilities/ApnRemover.exe

There is also a multi- toolbar remover from SmartPCTools

http://www.smartpctools.com/toolbar_remover/

It will list most if not all of the browser add-ons.

Only select the ones you want to remove.

A long favored utility HiJackThis

http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/?source=dlp (from TrendMico but hosted on SF)

DO NOT remove everything it finds -only remove what is clearly not what you want on your system.

Check for changed Start page, BHO (Browser Helper Objects ) and Toolbars. Startup items.etc

This is a very handy tool ,but can be intimidating for inexperienced users.

Certain forums offer help with HJT logs.

Also ,even after uninstall ,you may want to check the respective browser's add-ons,

mostly found under Tools -Manage Add-ons and disable the ones you don't want.

Check your default Start- or Home page and change it in the browser's settings.

How to avoid getting the ASK stuff back again:

This toolbar is often bundled with other software and un-ticking the option during the install procedure,

will avoid the ASK install.

Nevertheless they often still end up in Temp files ,possibly with an "activator".

So clean those Temp files. A search will- or should- reveal them too.

There is more to avoiding toolbar installation via Group management or registry scripting,

but I feel that's beyond the scope of the average user.

Subject: [PCSOFT] Like a bad penny --

-- that ASK toolbar and Search keeps cropping up! It was apparently

downloaded with some other software on a HP, Windows Vista SP1, 3 gig

memory and (I think) a 230- or a 250-gig hard drive. (Just

incidentally, with ASK in there, it won't let me download SP 2; the

download fails. Hmmm...)

I tried removing the ASK toolbar etc. through the Control Panel; didn't

work. Installed Bing desktop, then tried again. Thought I was rid of

it, but the next time someone went online with it, ASK was back.

:::sigh::: Tried disabling in in Tools; it came back like 'that' cat,

but it didn't take 'til "the very next day." Went into regedit and

spotted it in a category by itself, but now I'm not sure -- should I

just take anything out of there that's related to ASK? Or will that do

irreparable damage? If it were my own computer, I'd go for it. Since it

is the local Humane Society's computer, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Someone had also removed the antivirus from the computer. I was able to

download, install and scan with MSSE which found a Trojan. Eradicated

that virus with no problem. (See, I'm learning! <G>)

As always, any help is greatly appreciated!
