<<I suddenly have an extra icon in the "My Computer" area>>

Happens sometimes, these ghost icons can turn up in the darnedest places. I
used to have about 20 of them in Control Panel (which I traced, I think, to
CorelDraw). They don't do any harm, and don't seem to take up space. I
have one right now same as yours. No Properties, just dead.

Sometimes running Scandisk gets rid of them, or sometimes restoring registry.

Sometimes they just disappear as mysteriously as they came. Gremlins at
work no doubt.

You haven't been swearing at Microsoft, have you?
