Jessi,
You can not uninstall Windows Media Player in XP because it's a feature of
the operating system. As you know, even though you can not remove it
entirely, you can revert back to a previous version. If you have Service
Pack 2, it won't show the listing in Add and Remove Programs unless you have
the "Show updates" box checked at the top of the window. Check that box and
scroll to "Windows XP - Software Updates" and you'll see it.
On the file association problem, I suggest you start with Windows Media
Player. Open it and go to Tools / Options / File Types tab and configure it
like you want. Then open the program that should be responsible for those
files Media Player is attempting to open and check it's options /
preferences for file association. Finally, go to Control Panel / Folder
Options / File Types tab and check the file types in question. There it will
show which program Windows is set to open that file type with along with a
"Change..." button where you can specify the program you want to use if you
want to change it. After making any changes, click "OK" to save them and
close the windows.
If you reinstall Windows Media Player 10 you will have an opportunity to
designate it's file association again.

Subject: [PCSOFT] Windows Media Player 10
We're having a problem with Win Media Player 10 on my husbands PC. He's
running XP Home. He did a fresh install recently. Before the fresh install
he tried to UN-install it from Add/Remove programs, but it would only do a
roll-back to WMP 9. He did that and then upgraded to 10. The problem is that
it won't install into his Add/Remove programs. It just isn't there. He also
uses Tuneup Utilities 2004 and that also has an add/remove...He can find it
there, but again, it will only allow a roll-back to 9! How can we remove WMP
10 and freshly install it so it will place itself into add/remove? Also
another problem is that the Player is associating itself to text
files,etc... and we can't figure out why. If someone could help us we would
sure appreciate it. Thanks.
