<<<< Support for USB mass storage routinely assumes FAT32 drive formatting. If this what you were using on the prior machine, there's a reasonable chance that you old drive does not need to be reformatted to work. But if you were using NTFS, then you may need some other way to transfer those files. David Gillett >>>

wrestling with exactly the same problem, i had a different experience.

at first it got installed under "usb controllers" as "mass storage" device and also in "disk drives". BUT could'nt access it in "my computer"

so tried control panel/performance and maintenence/administrative tools/computer management/storage/disk management (local).

disk 0 and disk 1 showed up.

clicked disk 1.... window asking whether i wanted to "initialize". clicked yes.

a flicker, and was told "error intializing"....see "event log".... could'nt understand the log (very tech)

so... tried slaving to hdd (to which data needed to be saved). win xp took half an hour ( presumably reading both drives) to boot. still no luck.

tried on another ide slot ... no luck.

so..... from your above input it appears that the other method(s)could be

(1) network both computers

(2) hook to another system which has FAT32 HDD/ access it/ copy to cd.... whatever.

will any of these work...?

ps. both old and new HDD of mine are NTFS.

TIA for any input
