Thanks everyone for their help.
The thing that worked was starting in Safe Mode, running Scan Disk and
then Defraged and it worked although defraging took forever.
Seems like there should be an easier way, but this works and it is
getting the job done.

Turn off screensaver. Turn off any scheduled tasks. Anything running
or
cutting in will defeat Scandisk or Defrag. Are you sure antivirus is
completely disabled? Also disable any "crash-guard" or rescue programs.

Lew: This is usually a sign that something is running in
the background which interupts the defrag. Make sure all
apps are closed out and another hint....run the scan disk
FIRST. Defrag will interrupt if it finds certain errors in
files. Hope this helps.
