I have SBC/DSL and received a legitimate email from them regarding SP2. Here is part of their e-mail:

Please copy and paste the below URL into your browser to download the software update.
    http://download.yahoo.com/dl/sbcy/xpsp2fix.exe

In addition, if you are using a firewall on your XP computer, you will need to go to the firewall manufacturer's website and load any software updates they provide for Service Pack 2. Although we do not provide support for firewall software, you can find information and web-links for the major firewall companies at:
Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com
Norton Personal Firewall: http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/npf/
McAfee Personal Firewall Plus: http://www.secureie.com/c/002/firewall2004/firewall2004_02.asp?source=goog&keyword=firewall&

Also, at the end of this email is the following note:

Subject: Re: [PCSOFT] Downloading an executable file

SP2 adds some fixes to IE, and I have not heard of what you're talking about. This sounds like some kind of phishing expedition to plant some spyware or worse on victims' computers. Has anyone heard of this? For now I would suggest that you skip the download. If there were something you had to do it would be best to go to Windows update since it should be there as a critical update if it is real.

>I've just received an e-mail from SBC Yahoo stating customers who are using Windows XP operating systems need to download a software update to make their browsers compatible with MS Service Pack 2. The update extension is .exe which makes me nervous. Could I get your comments on the security of this download?
