Linda,
Try this.  Right click an empty part of the desktop, click Arrange Icons in
the shorcut menu, and then click by Name, by Type, by Size or by Date.  If
you want to be real neat about the icons, you can also  activate the Auto
Arrange command to tell Windows to keep the desktop spic-and-spam all the
time.
I am running Windows 98, but think Windows 95 would be about the same
principle.
