Happens to us all at times.

I wouldn't recommend what you suggest.  To stop a program loading once it's
started is one of the best ways to drive your computer insane. It can
easily invoke a crash. And even lead to more dire consequences.  Once
started, let it open all the way, until your hard drive activity
stops.  The bigger the program, the more important this is---a cruel fact
of computer life.

Operator impatience is one of the biggest causes of computer instability, imho.
