I am thinking of abandoning Windows 98 and moving to Linux

I was an OS/2 user until IBM abandoned the OS and I then reluctantly became
a Windows user.

Which Linux distribution will make my transition most painless?

I know this is almost like asking what colour wine is best but I am hoping
that I will get some objective opinions to start me on my journey.  My wife
is a total computer neophyte from a usr's perspective so I am concerned
that the applications have a certain ease of use.
