The task bar, including the Start button, can be hidden due to at least two
reasons:

1. The task bar has the "auto hide" property enabled.
2. The height of the task bar i zero.

To determine which is the case, move the mouse pointer down to the bottom of
your screen. Either the task bar pops up because it was "auto hidden". If
not, you will se the mouse pointer changing into double arrows; drag the
"top" of the task bar upwards until you get the desired height (probably
corrsponding to 1 layer of buttons).

Another thing that might have happended is that someone has inadvertedly
dragged the task bar from the (horizontal) lower edge (or should it be
called "border"?) of the screen to a different edge of the screen, for
example the (vertical) left edge. Try to locate the task bar in any of the
edges.

Good luck!
