Lew, have you fixed this?  (I'm trying to catch up on the list.)  If you have
not yet uninstalled Word, try this first:  open the drawing menu.  Way on the
left side, right next to "Draw" is the Select Object pointer (it looks like an
arrow, hover the mouse pointer over it if you have tool tips turned and its
name, Select Object, will appear.  Click on it and then try and click on the
text box.

I'd had a similar problem and this should allow you to select the drawing
objects (like Text Box) when they are behind the text.  Once you have it
selected, you need to change from "behind text".
