We'll need much more info, including your level of expertise (beginner,
experienced user, whatever).

The obvious thing which comes first to mind is either shortage of memory,
or too many background progs running (really 2 aspects of the same problem).

Run Msconfig/Startup tab and untick everything. Reboot and see if that
makes any difference. If so, from there it's simple trial and error to see
which startup prog is casing the problem. XP has performance tools to help
analyse these probs.
