I expect that you can find lots of help with this on PCSOFT's
sister list PCBUILD.
My general advice is that you should not count on saving money
(over buying an assembled system) on your *first* attempt. Building
your own is a good way to get to know "what's under the hood", and so
over time you can upgrade specific components with some confidence.
As to recommending specific parts, there's a constant trade-off
between price and quality, and some components whose usefulness
depends on what you will use the machine for. One possibility is to
list your three top applications and a budget, and invite people (on
PCBUILD) to suggest configurations within that framework.
