It's only slow when you first turn it on every day.  It runs a full scan and 
then the computer is back to normal speed.  Takes about 20 minutes I think. 
I use it on 2 XP machines also.  You can change the settings so that it 
doesn't run a full scan every day.  I have also used Avast which is also a 
great program... and you can set it to run every day or only when you want 
to do a full scan, just like with AVG.
