Hi Ron,

To answer your questions:
Yes,inadvertent deletion of crucial files can cause major havoc like
this. All these cleaning programs are not infallible and you have to
scrutinize what you delete.

However, this may be a different problem.
It could be due to software as well as hardware.

The way to tackle it is as follows:

1.From cold boot, repeatedly tap F8 untill you see the boot option screen.
Try Safe Boot first - if that doesn't work, try Last Known Good.
Next is to try a repair.
An excellent guide to a non-destructive repair is at
> XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option
http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189500364

Or > How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
  http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

However, you did mention that "> it proved impossible to reinstall or
repair, finally leading to the impasse."

This leads me to believe it may be hardware related especially Ram.
If more than one stick of ram - first swap locations - if no luck,
try one at a time and see if you you get proper boot up.

This is one of those times that you need a proper rescue CD
Then you can explore your harddrive, check the boot.ini, run a virus
scanner etc etc.
But they take time to make and access to another computer.
You could use some of the Live CD Linux distros ,like Damn Small Linux
(DSL) or Knoppix, but most Windows users are not familiar with the
commands and have to take time to learn how to access the Windows partition.
Instead you van try Windows based Live CDs, like
Reatogo > http://reatogo.de/REATOGO.htm
UBCD4Win > http://www.ubcd4win.com/
BootCD http://www.diskinternals.com/boot-cd/
Boot disc info can also be found at BootDisk.com http://www.bootdisk.com/

Hope this helps.

Peter E.

My desktop, four years old (Athlon AMD sempron processor 900MHz, running
Win XP on a Sapphire A3 m275 MB) has seized up to the point where
booting only gets as far as the Win XP logo, then the BSOD appears
saying 'A problem has been detected and WinXP has ben shut down to
prevent damage. Page_fault_in_nonpaged _area

Fatal error: prevents setup from continuing. Setup failed to install the
product catalogues. Setup lg files should contain more info.Log file:
C:\win\setuperr.log error code fffffc06

This situation arose when Internet Explorer failed to download AVG and
then System Restore displayed the message 'rstrui.exe corrupt file. Then
WinXP wouldn't restart and it proved impossible to reinstall or repair,
finally leading to the impasse.

How can I get out of this? Wasit caused by inadvertently deleting a file
during a disk or registry cleanup? Any help will be welcome.
