Usually one can run two or more AV programs without any conflict problems.
You can run Avast "on demand" to scan for viruses. You can also run Avast
to check for viruses before it boots into Windows, which can get rid of
some that hide in the boot sector or elsewhere.  Avast is a complete virus
protection solution so two AV programs like Norton and Avast are not
necessary. Avast updates new virus definitions every few days as the new
definitions come out. If you are attacked by a very new virus and your
virus program doesn't yet have the definition for it installed, isolate the
virus in a safe location or change the three-character suffix to some
extension that won't execute, like *.XXX and wait for your next update.
Then either delete it or attempt to strip the virus out by "fixing" the
file with your AV program. (If you need to keep it because it's a critical
OS file, etc.)
