Two things come to mind...
MS makes the rules in the OS, and then does things
their own way (that nobody else is allowed to do)
inside Office and other places.

But if we get away from conspiracy theories and move
on to paranoia, I have seen some floppy drives do some
mighty strange things just before I replaced them and
solved all my problems.
