A bit of explanation of why I want to try this. My son tried to load an
old (1996 era) DOS game that was written for Win 3.11. Apparently (I'm
guessing) it's method of launching was to change the boot record and force
a re-boot to DOS. I do remember that when the game was launched, it
re-booted the machine and if you didn't close the game properly it would
boot to the game on the next startup.

Anyway the installation on the Win98 machine locked the machine and really
fouled up several things until we got it removed. Anyway now when I boot
the machine, just after the Post, and before Starting Windows message, I
get a message stating "Windows 98 is Starting your DOS Program". Nothing
is launched, and the computer continues to boot and operate normally. I
used a process viewer and confirmed that no other processes were running
other than what I was expecting.

Before you start thinking virus and Startup programs, I have scanned with
McAfee, InoculateIT, and Housecall.antivirus.com. I have *nothing* in
autoexec.bat or config.sys and I have tried un-checking everything in all
the startup items using MSCONFIG, Startup Cop and Smart Start. Anyway, I
know what all the lines are launching in the startup items.

I even did a "Scan all files on C Drive" for the text string, "Starting
your DOS Program" but nothing showed up in any file.

The only other place I know of that could cause this message is the boot
record. And that's the reason that I want to refresh the boot record.

Thanks for your responses, and I'll let you know what happens.

Doug
