Actually this morning I was able to fix the problem by booting after the F8
key into "start with the last successful load" option. It presented me with
a screen that said active desktop had a problem and did I want to fix it. I
selected that option and that fixed everything. I did try downloading
updates but MSFT didn't like the version of XP Pro it was finding. It seems
to have blocked IE but I downloaded Firefox on my computer and transferred
it to this old one. Things seem to be working now and I simply don't want
to waste anymore time on it. It really needs a clean install but then I
would probably loose some of the things they are comfortable with so I'm
going to stop here. Thanks for all the suggestions.
