Select the subject. . .goto select/inverse. . . this will make the
selection everything but the original selection.

Make sure that black is the foreground color in the tools pallet. . . click
on the paint bucket and then click on the part that you want to be
background. . . .you may have to click more than once, but the background
will then become black.
