Hi Myra,
try, if you can move the line upwards once you hit return. In my Word
2002 I can draw the line, hit return and then move the line one line
up and this way can type below the line.
If you prefer the shift and underline way - try to use the undo key
after hitting return (when it changed the line all across the
document), it should undo the line across and leave you being able to
write below the short line you typed.
