Dave:
A "Government Wipe" as I, the original poster, understand it, is where
Norton writes 9's to every part of your hard drive that has free space. In
other words, when you delete a file, you just change the pointer to it, the
data remains on your hard drive until it is written over by some other data.
Thus, if the government came in, and took your hard drive, they could
re-create what was on it. the government wipe feature is supposed to make
this impossible, but, as I stated, I deleted my programs, thereby creating
orphaned data files, then did the Govt wipe, and then re-installed the
program, and found that all of my data was still there (this was Quicken).
One of the respondents wrote that Uninstalling the PROGRAM, did NOT
uninstall the data, nor did it delete it, so that when I did a Govt Wipe,
the data file was not free space, so it was not overwritten. I will have to
try again, after deleting the data file also!
