1. Close Outlook 2002.

2. Find the PST mail file you want to back up. By default it is
outlook.pst , and sits in

C:\Documents and Settings\[yourlogonname]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

If you've changed the path and/or name of your mail file, go to where
your file actually sits.

3. Treat it like any other file. Use drag&drop burning if you have
DirectCD (or equivalent) installed (or Win's native CD burning thing,
which I am not familiar with), or else open up your CD burning app and
point to the location of the PST file/s you want to save, and do
whatever that program requires to copy a file out to a CD.

As long as Outlook is closed, and you know where your file sits, it's
just like any other file, to be copied wherever/however you choose.
Don't move or erase the original though, or else Outlook will not open
with your current mail/folder setup the next time you run the program.
If you want to have your mail stored to a nondefault location, go to
File > Data File Management to tell Outlook where you want your mail
store to reside. You can have more than one PST file on that list, but
only one can function as the "mail delivery location", i.e. where the
Inbox for new mail is located.

I suggest running the "compact now" tool (in Properties for the open PST
file, click the Advanced button) before backing up the file -- no need
to waste any more space on the blank CD than MS already causes to be
eaten just by the file itself.

irrelevant, I want universal openability, text search, and ease of
