No, it's not normally necessary. Each time you make a new Restore Point, an
earlier one gets thrown out, because of space limitations. You may
therefore end up by throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Doing so will
severely limit the distance you can go back.
You can make a restore point manually at any time when you feel that
everything is going nicely.

Yes. Sleep mode is usually best, this can usually be triggered by one of
your keyboard keys, once you have set it in Power Options. Some people
prefer hibernation, which needs to be enabled in Power Options.
Sounds like you are doing all the basics pretty right.
