There are so many places that can start programs in XP
that I would recommend getting Startup Control Panel to
view all the sources (common and individual user). It is

This one still plagues me. I followed your suggestion,
Peter, and searched
the run key for references to files that no longer exist.
I didn't find
any, and even removed all non-essential values from the
key. I welcome any
further suggestions.

Check in the registry ...\run area and see if there is
any reference to
a file that is no longer there. A missing file can
launch an explorer
window - the folder that the file was located in is
opened since the
file is not there. This happened to me some time back
and it took some
sleuthing for me to figure out what had happened.
