Google will do lots of things...

If you type a ten digit phone number into Google,
and it's not an unlisted number, Google will recognize that
it's a phone number and give you the name and address
corresponding to the number.

The other day my old IBM keyboard died. (This is one
of the "clicky" keyboards that have individual switches
for every key instead of using a cheap rubber membrane.)
I typed the part number that's on the back of the keyboard
(42H1292) into Google and found a website still selling
this keyboard.

If Windows tells you that you have a problem with some
dll file, type the name of the file into Google and it
will likely tell you where to download a copy of the file
...and you may see references to messages (on discussion
forums) from other people having problems with this file.

If you were watching the tennis match where commentator
John McEnroe mentioned someone named "R. Norris Williams"
and asked for information on him, Google told me that he
was a Titanic survivor who went on to win the U.S.
Championships in 1914 and 1916 and won a gold medal in
mixed doubles in the 1924 Olympics.

If you want to know about an author, composer, politician,
scientist, etc., just enter the full name into google
in quotes.

If you want to see what people have to say about problems
with fuel pumps in an old Chevy Camaro, type fuel pump
and Camaro into "Google Groups" and you'll find hundreds
of messages.

Want to find the website for some company? Type the company's
name into Google. One of the first few hits should be the main
website.

Want to see what's new in your home town? Type the town's
name into Google and you may find the website of your
home town newspaper or local television station or high
school or college.

Type your name into Google and see what happens!

Etc.

The key is to pick good keyword(s) and to skim past as many
of the superfluous links as necessary.

I like to use the advanced search page at
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en
but you can just put quotes around multi word strings of words
at the main google webpage.
