Well, I'm currently trying to exorcise some demons from my own LAN, but can
offer some suggestions in no particuliar order (note I know little about
networking).
How are you connecting to the I'net? Thru a router to broadband, or other?
If thru router, when was the last time it was powered off? Reset/power it
off for a few minutes; do the same with your dsl/cable modem (if
applicable). Then power up modem, let it fully boot, then power up
router. Then boot PC and see if this was successful
Also, try connecting directly to your dsl/cable modem (if applicable) and
test your connection.
Check your settings to see if you're going thru a misconfigured/dead proxy
server (compare settings from working install)
Check your TCP/IP properties. Is DNS server enabled (has an address
entered) or set to disabled/obtained automatically?
Run IPconfig or Winipcfg and release then renew your adapter(s)
