Back in the old days of Windows 3.1, one trick was to edit the
autoexec.bat file to read
 "win :"
-- the space preceding the colon was critical. To be useful, it was
better to REM out the @ECHO OFF command in the autoexec.bat file.
With subsequent versions of Windows, you can press ESC when the clouds
appear, but you won't see much. A better way is to hold down the control
key during the initial boot process before you get the "Windows NN is
loading" message. This will bring up a menu with a number of choices
such as safe mode. One of them lets you vote yay and nay on what gets
loaded and what doesn't. Or, if you really want to know what is
happening, choose the option to create a bootlog.txt file. Be forewarned
-- it is a very large -- and largely incomprehensible -- text file that
details all of the software-related events that occur when Windows is
loading. If you use WordPad to read it (it will be in C:), the search
function is useful to locate problems by searching for "fail". It can be
a useful trouble shooting tool. Another useful utility (at least in
Win98 -- don't know about earlier versions) is to run "hwinfo /ui" from
the command prompt. This program also generates a long report, but it is
easier to scan than bootlog.txt because problem areas are printed in
red.
