I have an Adaptec 2940U controller with an HP 4020i CD-R. I use Adaptec's
EZ SCSI 3.01 which has just the sort of features that you're talking about.
It apparently has algorithms in the software to eliminat (or at least
reduce) hiss and pops from records.

I think that the key, too, is having both good audio equipment and a good
sound card. Remember, what's happening is that the sound card must digitize
the analog information from your stereo...once it's digitized, there
shouldn't be any issues with it, but you obviously want the most faithful
reproduction of the original sound, so the equipment on the analog side is
pretty critical. I have a Diamond Monster Sound card which seems to have a
fairly wide dynamic range and flat signal response.

I did the same thing that you're asking about and it worked pretty well. On
the analog end, I used a Denon amp/preamp and a Thorens turntable.
Everything was connected with Monster Cable interconnects, even from the
preamp to the computer. It makes a difference...don't let anyone tell you
otherwise.

On the audio equipment issue, please feel free to email me
privately...anything further would be way off topic.

Hopefully that's some help for you.
