There's a tutorial on this subject (and several others written for novices)
in the tutorials section on my website below.

I've written it on the assumption that you know nothing about the subject.
It explains the function of  File Associations, how they work, and details
various methods of how to control them. In, I hope, non-technical language.

It's a topic every novice needs to come to grips with eventually, or you'll
soon be floundering.
