If you have a full system back-up, any patch or upgrade is safe...

Most patches and upgrades go fine, but you can never be sure...
There is always a small number of people whos' particular mix
of hardware and/or software causes them trouble...

Disclaimer: Nobody gives much of a warranty on software in
general or patches in particular.
For a normal home user SP2 has been around a very long time
and may very well be safe.
