When I did a recent install of Avast, there was such a warning. There was also a suggested simple workaround which I followed and things are working fine. I did have to reread the warning to make the proper choice, so maybe it could be worded a little more clearly.

Subject: Re: [PCSOFT] Compatibility:Avast & Zone Alarm
I've been using Avast with the free zonealarm for at least a year with no problems at all. I have never seen a message from Avast or Zonealarm about any incompatibility. I am running XP Pro with SP1.

One wonders why that warning wasn't put out there up front? Anyway, my PC is REALLY acting up today, with both slow and non-responses, and I wonder if that may be related to this incompatibility. If the consensus is Yes, then I can either try another free anti-virus, AVG, the top-rated fee-based PC-cillin by Trend Micro, or, because compatibility should be assured, go with Zone Alarm firewall with anti-virus. Comments are very much appreciated
