My hard drive just died, and since I need to replace it, I would like
to get some up to date opinons about Linux. The only version
available down here is Red Hat 6.0 or sooner or later 6.1 will arrive.
For some of the teaching programs I still use I need compatiblilty
with DOS and Win98, I need NT 4.0 to run the network for the Win
progs, on my "newer" machines, and I would like to try Linux, as a
server and/or workstation. My lastest installation was formatting
first with DOS, installing Win98 and then NT 4.0, (fix 5) That
sequence and combination worked fine.
Questions:
A. I have read that Linux wants an entire drive if it is installed in its
server version. Still true? If true, should I put Linux on a smaller C:\
drive, and can I still boot to DOS/Win98/NT from a slave drive,
using the partition software that comes with Red Hat?
Booting a DOS/Win9x/NT machine from a DOS boot disk doesn't
seem to work.
B. Does anyone have enough experience with DOS and Win9x
"emulators/shells" running under Linux to give a strong opinion that
they usually work/don't work?
C. Assuming they work, what are the minimum basic hardware
requirements for clients running under Linux? I also have a
combination of five 286/386/486 machines that I was thinking of
putting in a Novell net, to run only the DOS progs, if I can find
some ISA net cards.
