Diane,
One of the links in one of the replies to you: www.filehippo.com appears to be DIFFERENT software: "AD-Ware" (not Ad-Aware). And it doesn't appear to be free. I think it does a "free" SCAN of your PC then tells you that you really need to buy their program. These "free" scans are sometimes scams instead of scans, so check out the seller (maybe on Google) before you download anything. Sometimes they download something "free", onto your pc then try to scare you into buying their product, and then if you don't bite, they continue to popup dun notices for the rest of your PC's natural life. This may not be the case with this site, but just be careful.
Here is "Ad-Aware" by Lavasoft. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ There are two versions: free and pro
Here is "SpyBot Search & Destroy" by Safer-Networking. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
You should be able to click the update button before running Ad-Aware or Spybot S&D and it should check for new problem file signatures, as well as new program updates if you have it configured to do that (or it may be a separate button, I don't remember).
I highly recommend Spywareblaster! I have used it for many years with absolutely fantastic results. It keeps the boogers from even GETTING ON your machine in the first place. And it updates itself when new versions come out (if you have autoupdate - or - you can do it manually for free). Its one of the shareware groups I donated to because their software is top-notch and I want them to stay in business (even a dollar makes a difference over a lot of users). No, I'm in no way affiliated - I just really appreciate this application! It just silently does its job without any input from me (except once a year when I resubscribe to autoupdate for $10) and without running in the background all the time, which I really REALLY appreciate!

Subject: [PCSOFT] Ad-Aware personal (free) can't update
Have not been able to update since late 2007, any ideas? I also have
Spybot S&D, what else would you suggest if Ad-Aware is a thing of the past?
