when i go to TOOLS and the box opens up with the two choices and i 
restart the computer ..the screen is blue and the scan disk text 
finishes about 2 lines and then the message: CANNOT OPEN VOLUME FOR 
DIRECT ACCESS.  i went back to tools and just checked the bottom 
box..SCAN FOR AND CORRECT BAD SECTORS..and i believe it did that because 
it lasted for 20 or 30 minutes it seemed..that worked without 
re-starting the computer. the problem was when both boxes were checked.

ps  the same thing appears on every startup..no other changes in the 
system..this started dirctly after installing the hosts file..nothing 
else in windows is abnormal..
i will check out the website you last suggested..thanx again for you time
