Barbara Allen asks some questions about system resources.
I will comment on one item, because it has come up before. Barbara Allen
says she has 52 percent free RAM. As another as pointed out, that should
be enough free RAM, but in my experience that amount of free RAM can lead
to unsatisfactory performance.
I have found that when I have 60-70 percent free RAM it can quite easily
be reduced to half that, and if I am not careful to half that again. At
30-35 percent free RAM my system slows, at half that it crawls.
Consequently my latest thinking is to have maximum free RAM. In a prior
post (see archives) I listed the programs I have at startup that gives me
98 percent free RAM of 60M RAM installed.
This amount of free RAM has given me much better performance than when I
had about 70 percent free RAM at startup.
To maintain this amount of free RAM I have to check msconfig, Startup
after every new installation or reinstallation. As Barbara Allen states,
programs are constantly putting themselves into Startup without being
asked. I uncheck these.
A Microsoft technician told me it would be better to go into the Registry
and delete items not wanted to startup, so as not have to use Selective
Startup in msconfig, but I do not know how much merit there is to this
advice.
