Hi Robert and Rick,
I built my computer via a computer store offering the service. Basically I
went to the store, chose the components I wanted, brand name etc and then
assisted in the installation of the extras, ie CDRW, ZIP drive, RAM, etc.
They did all the "hard" work as I watched.
When it came to installing the OS of Win 98 SE, I had to "buy" the disk
seperately. It was a "full version" from MS not an OEM one. I asked what
the difference was and was told this.
Any OEM, Original Equipment Manufacturer, disk that came with a "store
bought, ie Wal Mart, Staples, Office Max, Circuit City" etc namebrand
computer was a disk that a namebrand of the store bought computer had had to
pay MS for the rights to install on their Originally manufactured computers.
And that all makes, ie Compaq, Dell, Gateway, "customize" the OS disk to
their OEM specifications so that a Manufacturer like a Gateway computer owner
could not use a Compaq computer owner's Operating system disk on their
computer. BUT the "full version" MS sold was a version that could be loaded
on any computer that was NOT from a Manufacturer like Compaq or Gateway or
Dell etc.
Hope this makes sense.
